The UK gears up for snow as a winter freeze is forecast
Parts of Britain could experience their lowest temperatures of the season in the next few days, with forecasters predicting temperatures as low as -2?C in parts of England and Wales tonight, with even colder temperatures expected tomorrow night.
The Met Office has issued advisories warning of heavy snow in the eastern parts of England on Thursday, and the southeastern parts of England on Friday, citing a “moderate risk of severe weather.”
With the promise of some winter white in the UK comes both the hope of the idyllic White Christmas, along with the fear that extreme weather could affect holiday plans for British tourists and residents alike.
Perhaps seeding some of this concern is the memory of February’s snowfall and the resulting disruption. The unexpectedly heavy snowfall early this year wrecked havoc on London’s transport system, with busses pulled off the roads, tube lines disrupted, and cancellations on many flights into and out of London airports.
It’s not all bad news for visitors though. With the likes of Buckingham Palace, the Houses of Parliament, and St. Paul’s Cathedral all dusted with snow, it could prove one of the prettiest festive seasons in London. Cities across Britain have lit their Christmas lights as well, promising a festive backdrop whatever the weather.
As to the question on everyone’s mind: will it be a white Christmas? Bookmakers are slashing odds on a white Christmas across cities throughout Britain, but forecasters remain deliberately non-committal.
