Contrary to popular belief, the “black boxes” can be destroyed. It usually takes more damage to destroy them than it does the airplane itself. Also, they are called “flight data recorders” and “cockpit voice recorders”, and they get painted bright fluorescent orange. They only look black after they have been in a fire. Yes, their cases are usually make from Aluminum, just like the majority of the aircraft. But if the entire aircraft was built as heavy as the data recorders, it would be too heavy to get off the ground.
