historical question re: a supposed presidential gift to the emperor of Japan?

I have heard this story more than once. don’t know of the validity of it. I’ve tried researching. don’t know where to go from here.

the story goes that teddy Roosevelt (maybe another pres.) sent the emperor of Japan a commercially made needle. shortly thereafter, the same needle was sent back with an additional needle mounted in the “eye” of the first
guys, i’ve had two completely different answers…? anyone out there who knows?

I’ve heard the same little legend with a variation. it was regarding technology, just like stated above but the Swiss clock makers had developed the smallest spring they had ever invented and sent it off to the Japanese to brag and it was returned with a hole bored through the shaft of the spring.

I think this story must have gone around a few times
